The Rongai Route ascends Kilimanjaro from the north eastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. It is the quietest of the main routes and retains a real sense of unspoilt wilderness, offering a completely different perspective on the mountain by approaching it from the north. The northern side also sits in the rain shadow, which makes Rongai the most reliable choice during the wetter months.
The trail begins gently at Nale Moru village, crossing maize fields into pine forest before climbing through caves camps to Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly set beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. From there you cross the saddle to Kibo Hut and make the midnight push to Gillman’s Point and Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, descending on the Marangu side to Horombo. Park fees, camping and hut fees, three meals a day, mineral water, a sleeping bag, porters, cook and guide are included, along with your summit certificate.
