Ol Pejeta in Laikipia is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth, Najin and Fatu, both female, guarded around the clock. It is also home to Baraka, a blind black rhino you can meet up close, and to the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, which cares for animals rescued from the black market in West and Central Africa.
The conservancy holds the big five across open plains with Mount Kenya rising to the east, and it runs a genuinely well regarded model of combining wildlife conservation with cattle ranching and community development. This is a long day, with roughly three and a half hours of driving each way, so an early start is essential. Conservancy fees, transfers, mineral water and a professional guide are included.
