The Tana River at Sagana, around two hours north of Nairobi, offers some of the best commercially run white water in East Africa. The standard day covers roughly fifteen kilometres of river with rapids up to grade four, interspersed with calmer stretches where you can float, swim and take in the gorge scenery and birdlife along the banks.
No previous experience is needed. Trained river guides run a full safety briefing and paddle drill before you launch, and each raft carries a guide throughout with safety kayakers on the water. Helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles are provided. Gentler family floats on lower grade sections can be arranged for younger children or anyone who would rather take it easy. Transfers from Nairobi, rafting fees, equipment, guides and mineral water are included.
