Ascending by Sirimon and descending by Chogoria is widely considered the finest traverse on Mount Kenya, because you cross the mountain rather than retrace your steps. The climb rises through forest and moorland to Shipton’s Camp, takes a full acclimatisation day around Kami Hut and the Hausberg Tarns, then summits Point Lenana at first light from Austrian Hut.
The descent down the Chogoria side is the scenic reward, dropping past Minto’s Hut through some of the most dramatic country on the mountain. The dedicated acclimatisation day makes a real difference to how you feel on summit morning, which is why we recommend this version over a straight up and down. Park fees, full board, porters, cook, guide and summit certificate are included.
