Tour Description

Ascending by Sirimon and descending by Chogoria is widely considered the finest traverse on Mount Kenya, because you cross the mountain rather than retrace your steps. The climb rises through forest and moorland to Shipton’s Camp, takes a full acclimatisation day around Kami Hut and the Hausberg Tarns, then summits Point Lenana at first light from Austrian Hut.

The descent down the Chogoria side is the scenic reward, dropping past Minto’s Hut through some of the most dramatic country on the mountain. The dedicated acclimatisation day makes a real difference to how you feel on summit morning, which is why we recommend this version over a straight up and down. Park fees, full board, porters, cook, guide and summit certificate are included.

Detailed Itinerary

Venture Africa Budget Safaris representative will meet you at the airport or your hotel and after your breakfast. You will be introduced to your guide and given a full briefing regarding your trek programme. Once these final details are settled you depart Nairobi for Nanyuki in shared transport, with a private transfer available if needed, arriving for lunch. Later proceed to the Sirimon park gate, 1 hr, 2440m. From the gate follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest, which becomes heathland after about 3 hrs. About three and a half hours from the gate the track veers right to Judmier Camp at 3300m for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. About one hour from Old Moses Camp the track crosses the Ontulili River. Go right, contouring through the moorland and crossing Liki North, and continue uphill to Mackinder Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp, 4200m.

Spend the day acclimatising. Walk to Kami Hut and down to the Hausberg Tarns, Hausberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn, then walk back up to Austrian Hut for dinner and overnight. Your guide will give you updates on conditions higher up.

Leave at 3am up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff, with a clearing visible towards Lower Hall Tarns, arriving at Point Lenana around 6:30am and taking about 3 hrs. After the sunrise, descend to Minto’s Hut, 2 hrs, for breakfast, then continue down to Meru Mount Kenya Bandas at 2950m for dinner and overnight under canvas.

Descend on a 2 hr, 15km walk to the forest clearance to catch a 4×4 transfer vehicle, available at an extra cost, to Chogoria village where you connect with your shared transfer vehicle back to Nairobi.
