Destination

Mount Meru, Arusha National Park

Tour Description

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano 70km west of Kilimanjaro in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. At 4,562m it is the fifth highest peak in Africa, visible from Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and it makes both a superb climb in its own right and the best possible acclimatisation for anyone going on to attempt Uhuru Peak.

What sets Meru apart is the first day, walked inside Arusha National Park with an armed ranger escort, where giraffe, zebra, buffalo, antelope and elephant are regularly seen along the trail. The summit route follows a spectacular narrow ridge between the sheer inner cliffs of the crater and the sloping outer wall, with the Ash Cone below and Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds at sunrise. Park fees, hut fees, three meals a day, mineral water, a sleeping bag, porters, cook, guide and your certificate are included.

Detailed Itinerary

We drive from Arusha to Momella Gate. After a short registration at the gate our walk begins with a fully armed ranger escorting us. Along the way we can expect to see wildlife including zebra, giraffe, monkeys, antelope and often elephants along the route. Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

  • Elevation: 1,500m to 2,514m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking time: 4 to 6 hours
  • Habitat: Montane forest

The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep climb. The trail takes us slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Cone. After a hot lunch at Saddle Hut we can make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru at 3,820m for superb views just before sunset. Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

  • Elevation: 2,514m to 3,570m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking time: 3 to 5 hours
  • Habitat: Forest and moorland

We start early at around 1:30am to climb steeply to Rhino Point at 3,800m and on to Cobra Point at 4,350m. We reach the summit at 4,566m in time for sunrise, and there is every chance of seeing the peak of Kilimanjaro above the clouds. The final part of the climb runs along a spectacular narrow ridge line between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater. We take a short rest and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut.

  • Elevation: 3,570m to 4,565m to 2,514m
  • Distance: 5 km up, 13 km down
  • Hiking time: 10 to 12 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert, moorland and montane forest

We take a short and fast descent through open grassland and mixed forest, with the possibility of seeing wildlife, before reaching Momella Gate in the late morning. The return transfer will be waiting at Momella Gate to take you to Arusha or Moshi for an overnight stay.

  • Elevation: 2,514m to 1,500m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking time: 2 to 4 hours
