Samburu sits north of the equator in Kenya’s arid northern frontier, and the wildlife here is genuinely different from anything you will see in the Mara or Amboseli. The reserve is home to the Samburu Special Five, a group of dry country species found almost nowhere else on a standard safari circuit: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, blue necked Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra and the long necked gerenuk, which browses standing upright on its hind legs.
The Ewaso Nyiro River runs through the reserve, drawing game to a green ribbon of doum palms and riverine forest against the dramatic backdrop of the Mathews Range. Elephant, lion and leopard are all regularly seen along the river. A full day of game viewing gives you the time this landscape deserves. Park entrance fees, accommodation, all meals on safari, mineral water and airport transfers are included.
