Hell’s Gate is one of very few national parks in Kenya where you are permitted to explore on foot and by bicycle, which makes it completely different from a conventional game drive. Cycling through open country past zebra, giraffe, buffalo and eland, with towering red cliffs on either side, is the reason people come here.
The park is named for the narrow break in the cliffs that was once a tributary of a prehistoric lake, and its landscape of gorges and volcanic plugs, including Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower, famously inspired the look of animated film. A guided walk descends into Hell’s Gate Gorge past hot springs and narrow rock passages, and the Olkaria Geothermal Spa nearby offers a swim in a large naturally heated pool. Park fees, transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.
