The Giraffe Centre in Langata was founded in 1979 to save the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, of which only around 130 remained in Kenya at the time. The breeding programme has since released a substantial number back into protected areas across the country, and the centre now funds conservation education for Kenyan schoolchildren.
For visitors, the draw is the raised feeding platform that brings you level with the giraffes’ heads, close enough to hand feed them pellets and, if you are brave, to receive the famous giraffe kiss. There is also a self guided forest boardwalk through the neighbouring Gogo River Bird Sanctuary and a resident group of warthogs. It is short, memorable and one of the best things to do in Nairobi with children. Entrance fees, transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.
