Bomas of Kenya in Langata was established to preserve and present the traditional cultures of the country’s many communities in one place. The grounds hold recreated homesteads, or bomas, built in the authentic styles of groups including the Kikuyu, Maasai, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba, Taita, Mijikenda and Kisii, each laid out as it would be in its home region.
The centrepiece is the daily performance in the large auditorium, where the resident Harambee Dancers perform traditional songs and dances from across Kenya, including the Maasai adumu jumping dance and the acrobatic Samburu and Mijikenda routines. It is the most efficient way to get a feel for Kenya’s cultural range in a single afternoon, and it works particularly well as a first day activity. Entrance fees, transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.
