Paradise Lost, Kiambu

Tour Description

Paradise Lost sits on the outskirts of Nairobi at Kiambu, a green fifty four acre site built around a network of prehistoric caves and a waterfall. The caves were used as a hideout by Mau Mau fighters during the struggle for independence, and guided walks take you through the chambers and out behind the falls.

Beyond the caves the grounds hold a boating lake, camel and horse riding, nature trails, fishing, a butterfly area and picnic lawns shaded by indigenous trees. It is a relaxed half day rather than a wildlife experience, and it is popular with Kenyan families at weekends, which makes it a good choice if you want to spend a day somewhere green without driving far. Entrance fees, transfers, mineral water and a guide are included.

Detailed Itinerary

Your driver guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and drives out to Paradise Lost at Kiambu, on the northern edge of the city, a journey of roughly 45 minutes depending on traffic.

A guided walk through the prehistoric cave system on the site, used as a hideout by Mau Mau fighters during the fight for independence, with a path leading through the chambers and out behind the waterfall. Your guide explains the geology of the caves and their role in Kenya’s colonial history.

Free time in the grounds, with the option of a boat ride on the lake, camel or horse riding, fishing, the butterfly area or simply walking the nature trails through the indigenous woodland. These activities are paid for separately on site. There is a restaurant and picnic lawns if you would like to eat before returning to Nairobi.
